Check on your mover!
Movers in Maryland must comply
with all the applicable consumer
protection laws, but in MD
there is no formal licensing
system that governs in-state
(local) moving services. You
should know that all movers
that offer interstate moving
(out of state) must be licensed
by the US Department of Transportation.
In the state of Maryland you
can contact the
MMTA
– Maryland Movers Conference
to see if your mover
is a member or if there any
complaints filed against them.Inquire
about the mover's reputation
in the BBB (better business
bureu)
but remember that a few
complaints are acceptable,
as long as the mover proves
to make efforts to resolve
them with the customer.

Compare Estimated
Costs in writing
When considering a moving
company to perform your move
always ask them to provide
a visual estimate – to have
a rep. come to your home and
inspect your goods and other
conditions which may affect
the cost. You should always
request an estimate in writing
from at least 2-3 moving companies
to compare. Evaluate the weight
and volume of the items, demand
to know how the belongings
will be packed: by plastic
wrap or boxes and what is
the cost. Don’t make a decision
based on the price alone –
low estimates aren’t always
the best deal.

Additional charges
for packing & Storage
Moving companies may provide
additional services such as
packing of certain fragile
items like mirrors, piano
or china. Make a decision
ahead of time what items you
need packed and if these are
other extra services you’ll
need like reassembly and disassembly
of furniture or storing your
items in a storage facility
while you wait for your new
home.

Compensation for damages
or loss
It’s important to fully understand
the amount of compensation
or ‘valuation’ offered by
the mover in case your goods
are lost or damaged. The amount
of the valuation is the actual
compensation amount you’ll
receive from the mover and
it’s not to be confused with
insurance which is provided
by a 3rd party.
